Is CBT-I right for you?

Clinicians call it chronic insomnia when you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or falling back asleep at least three nights each week for three months. You may spend an hour awake at bedtime or wake at 3 a.m. and be unable to return to sleep.

Long commutes and changing work shifts can make a steady sleep schedule difficult. CBT-I starts with the hours you actually keep. It changes the habits and worry that can keep you alert in bed. Loud snoring or pauses in breathing may point to sleep apnea. This is a breathing problem that can occur with insomnia. We treat the insomnia, partners treat the apnea, and your clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.

Insurance and payment

We confirm coverage before you meet your clinician. A copay is a fixed amount due for each visit. A deductible is the amount you pay before your plan starts paying. You can also pay without using insurance.

What happens after you book

The first visit lasts about 50 minutes. Your clinician asks how you sleep now, how long the problem has lasted and what you have tried. You then keep a sleep diary—a two-minute morning note of when you fell asleep, woke and got up. It helps set your sleep window, the bedtime and wake time chosen from your own pattern. Treatment usually includes one visit each week for about six to eight weeks. Some patients notice changes during the first few weeks. See the full sequence on How CBT-I Works.

Does your clinic provide sleep studies?
